Ottawa Shooting Update: 2 Dead After Canadian Parliament Attack
2 people have been confirmed dead after a
gunman shot a soldier near the Canadian
Parliament and got access into the main
building before he was killed by security
personnel.
A soldier guarding the War Memorial near the
Canadian Parliament in Ottawa has lost his life
after an attacker shot him point blank » before
also being gunned down by security personnel.
Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was murdered by Michael
Zehaf-Bibeau, a convert to Islam who was born
Michael Joseph Hall in 1982.
Contrary to reports that there were multiple
shooters, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has said
that Zehaf-Bibeau was the lone gunman and
investigations are currently ongoing into his
actions and motives for same.
Watson told CNN:
"It appears there was just one shooter, and that
shooter is dead," "But it has been a traumatic
experience, obviously, for not only our city but
the country."
Prime Minister, Stephen Harper said:
"In the days to come, we will learn more about
the terrorist and any accomplices he may have
had, but this week's events are a grim reminder
that Canada is not immune to the types of
terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere in the
world."
"Let there be no misunderstanding: We will not be
intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated."
Zehaf-Bibeau had been arrested several times for
drug use before he converted to Islam.
Wednesday’s events led to a temporary lockdown
of the parliament after Prime Minister Harper was
taken out of the building.
