Ebola Update: Vaccine Could Be Available By January – WHO

According to the World Health Organization, an experimental vaccine for the Ebola virus could be available by January. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that an experimental Ebola vaccine could be in use by January. Assistant Director of the WHO, Dr. Marie Paule Kieny said in Geneva on Tuesday, October 21 that trials of the vaccine were ongoing and if deemed safe, a West African trial could then be conducted in January. Tens of thousands of doses of the vaccine would reportedly be made available for the trials but it is not clear when the said vaccine would be mass produced so as to be widely available. There is currently no cure or vaccine for the disease but experimental drugs and the blood of survivors has been used to treat the infected. The current Ebola outbreak has killed almost 5000 people mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
